Genoa Aquarium is the largest aquarium in Italy, first in Europe for animal species variety, second in Europe by surface, only after the one in Valencia, Spain and ninth in the world. It is located at Ponte Spinola, in the sixteenth-century ancient port of Genoa.
The Aquarium, property of Porto Antico di Genova SpA and managed by Costa Edutainment SpA, was inaugurated in 1992 at the Colombiadi, a celebratory Expo on the 500th anniversary of America’s discovery.
The building and its surrounding area was designed by architect Renzo Piano, interior design has been cared for by architect Peter Chermayeff. Subsequently it has been expanded several times. At its inauguration it was the second largest Aquarium in the world.
Since its opening in 2014, it has been visited by more than 25 million , averaging 1.2 million a year.
